Summer Foods That Can Wreak Havoc on Your Drains

Summer Foods and Your Drains

The season of backyard barbecues has officially arrived! There's no better way to start the festivities than by implementing best practices when it comes to summer home maintenance, but don't forget about demonstrating extra care with your drains.

Whether you've got plans to whip up a delicious meal in the kitchen or grill and chill in the backyard, there's one cardinal rule that should always be followed: be mindful of what foods you let go down the drain. Here's what summer foods you should avoid dumping down the drain:

Seafood Shells

Seafood is one of the cornerstones of a summertime menu! While we all enjoy a grilled shrimp skewer and delicious crab legs, it's important to remember that seafood shells should never go down the drain. They'll clog your drains and leave behind a smelly stench! It's best to dispose of all seafood shells in the trash instead.

Fibrous Veggies

Always eat your veggies, but never let them go down the drain. While we all enjoy getting our fix of summertime vegetables, your drains do not. Fibrous vegetables such as asparagus, potato peels, kale, and artichokes can cause serious drain clogs. To reduce waste and recycle veggies, add them to your compost for extra nutrients in your garden.

Fruit Seeds

There's nothing quite as refreshing as a slice of watermelon on a sunny day! After enjoying an array of fruit, you may be tempted to throw the remaining seeds in the drain. However, seeds and fruit pits can cause major clogs. If you have a garbage disposal, the strong nature of fruit pits can cause it to break down entirely. It's best to throw seeds in the trash or plant them to grow your own fruit!
